Wheelgate Park Theme Park

THEY SAY: The best value, all action, all weather family day out in Nottinghamshire.

WE SAY: So much to do. Is it a theme park, is it a zoo, a waterpark? Indoors and outdoors. Family favourite for us – not to be missed.

It was Mother’s Day, so I was looking for somewhere really great to spend the day with my family and after an online search I came across  Wheelgate “All Action” Family Theme Park.

It’s an all-weather mini theme park near Mansfield, probably best for younger children, set in 30 acres of beautiful countryside. The colourful website promises “thrilling attractions” and “massive indoor action” but I was pleasantly surprised at just how much there was to do.

From a carousel, a sandpit, a bouncy castle and a hay maze to a huge outdoor slide, a mini zoo, a boat ride and motorised cars, there genuinely is something for everyone – as cliche as that sounds.

With tiny houses to explore and bigger theme park rides too, it is like a cross between Sundown Adventure Land and Flamingo Land. One minute you were at a theme park, the next a zoo, then a park. And even I could fit my backside on the slide!

There are also plenty of play parks for some good old-fashioned fun and a little train that takes you around the grounds.

Obligatory family selfie on the train! (The guy in the flat cap is with us even if his face doesn’t show it.)

It’s all crammed in to a fairly small site, but we spent from 11.30am to 4.30pm there and I don’t feel like we did it all properly – only leaving because it started to chuck it down.

Until we arrived, I hadn’t even realised there was a falconry centre and zoo, plus a big tropical house.

Throughout the day there are several animal talks, shows and feeding sessions to join in, too.

The highlight for my four-year-old son Oliver, was feeding the lambs milk from a bottle. He tried to compare it to feeding his younger sister Jasmine as a baby but I don’t really see the similarity myself! We certainly didn’t stand her behind a fence and get her to fight other babies for the bottle!

There are also lots of smaller cuddly animals to handle, too.

But the best laughs of the day probably came from us all racing each other on the giant outdoor slide. Well, it’s not just for kids is it, where’s the fun in just watching? We also enjoyed laughing at my Dad and my nephew trying to figure out the motorised boats without going round in circles.

The park is perfect for the four to ten age group. But there was still enough to interest my two-year-old, who was admitted free because height restrictions limit the rides she could go on.

The park also has two large indoor hangars, ideal if it rains. Both host there own large soft play areas and a few fairground rides and attractions, including the mirror maze.

We took our own picnic and was really pleasantly surprised we were allowed to eat indoors at one of the cafés.

It’s obvious the staff are trained to high standards. At each ride, we were greeted and often told to enjoy the day. Bit Americanised but they weren’t over fussy.

There’s even a waterpark! Being March when we went there was no way we could try it, but it looked pretty impressive and is reason enough for us to go back in summer.

All in all, my two children had a brilliant day, therefore, I had the perfect Mother’s Day.
